By Murimi Gitari, September 29 2025,  The Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) has become the first institution in Kenya to receive the prestigious Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI) certification, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward green finance and climate resilience.

Awarded by the European Organisation for Sustainable Development (EOSD), the SSCI certification recognizes AFC’s commitment to aligning agricultural financing with global sustainability standards. This landmark achievement positions AFC as a trailblazer in sustainable agricultural finance, unlocking new opportunities to fund climate-smart projects and empower farmers to adapt to the growing challenges of climate change.

“We are honored to receive this recognition, which reinforces AFC’s leadership in advancing sustainable agricultural finance,” said George Kubai, Managing Director of AFC. “This achievement affirms our role in strengthening value chains and building a more resilient future for Kenya’s agricultural sector.”

Arshad Rab, Chairman of the International Council of Sustainability Standards and CEO of EOSD, praised AFC’s “unwavering commitment,” noting that the certification will help ensure Kenya’s agriculture remains “highly productive, resilient, and prepared to address future challenges.”

The SSCI certification also highlights AFC’s role as a trusted partner in inclusive, impact-driven finance, supporting Kenya’s transition to a climate-resilient economy through innovation and strategic investment.

With this recognition, AFC cements its position as a leader in green finance, setting a benchmark for other institutions across Africa to follow.
